HD 161056 is a very hot, normal star seen at great distance through much interstellar matter. Ground observations show it to have a very large polarization. Since it was also observed with HST, and in visible light has been used as a polarized standard star by observers on the ground, it can be used to compare WUPPE data to HST and other observations. In addition, it will be used to verify the UV signal throughout the flight.

The observations of this star were analyzed along with the other stars in the WUPPE interstellar medium polarization program. See our paper in AJ 112, 2726 1996.
