Introduction

This document describes the PDR package provided for the Prime Focus Imaging Spectrograph (PFIS). Each document is named, its contents described, and the principal author identified. Each of the numbered items is a self-contained document, with this document acting as a road map.

Instrument Description (Nordsieck)

This document describes the PFIS instrument at the highest level. This few-paged document gives any astronomer a good idea of what the instrument is, what its main components are, and what kind of science is being addressed. Its main sections are

Operational Concepts Definition Document (Kobulnicky)

This document presents the science cases for which the PFIS will be designed. Each instrument mode is described both operationally and with respect to the type of science the mode enables. The operational descriptions include all pertinent aspects of the SALT system as a whole.

Functional Performance Requirements Document (Nordsieck/O'Donoghue/Williams)

This document specifies the top-level performance targets for PFIS. This short, project-controlled document identifies the performance (resolution, throughputs, efficiencies) required to support the science modes described in the OCDD. Included are statements about how each requirement is to be verified. Also included are performance requirements required by PFIS from the rest of the SALT system, and a statement about whether the currently stated values for those requirements are adequate for PFIS.

Optics Design (Nordsieck)

This document presents the preliminary optical design of PFIS. Included are a design rationale and method, optical specifications for each optical element, and a fabrication plan.

Technical Studies

These documents describe the various technical studies that resulted in the science modes described in the OCDD.

Slitmask Requirements and Fabrication Document (Kobulnicky)

This document surveys the production of slit masks at other observatories, and baselines a slit mask production system for PFIS.

Grating and Filter Specification Document (Kobulnicky)

This document describes the study in which the VPH gratings and blocking filters were selected.

Etalon and Filter Trade Study (Williams)

This document describes the study in which the etalons and blocking filters were selected.

Polarimetric Optics Design Study (Nordsieck)

This document describes the study in which the polarizing elements were selected.

SAAO Detector Subsystem Design Study (O'Donoghue)

This document describes the study in which the detector parameters were chosen.

Mechanical Design (Swales Aerospace)

The preliminary mechanical design for PFIS was performed by Swales Aerospace. This company has extensive experience with designing and analyzing telescope structures with demanding weight and flexure constraints. Their reports compose the Preliminary Mechanical Design report.

Mechanical Design - Overview (Nordsieck)

This document outlines the scope of the preliminary analysis and summarizes the conclusions.

Conceptual PFIS Instrument Design (Badri Shurgar, Swales Aerospace)

This document presents the preliminary design for the structure, and the mechanisms that actuate the components of PFIS. It includes estimated costs, broken down by mechanism, cost of materials, and time to manufacture.

SALT Telescope Instrument Structure Analysis (Perry Wagner, Swales Aerospace)

This document details the preliminary structure design for PFIS. It includes finite element analysis of the structure, a cost estimate, and a fabrication plan.

Preliminary Control System Design (Percival)

This document presents the preliminary control system design. Included are a software block diagram, a description of the system requirements and architecture, and a data flow diagram.

This document also describes the thermal design and performance of PFIS, and how the instrument will meet the Observatory requirements for heat dissipation. Also included is a power budget, showing both instantaneous and time-averaged power dissipation.

Optical Integration and Test Plan (Burgh)

This document draft presents the beginning of the integration and test plan, mainly the optical integration and test. It will be elaborated for the Critical Design Review.

Commissioning Science for SALT/ IMPALAS (Kobulnicky)

This document describes the commissioning plan for PFIS. It includes a description of each mode to be commissioned, the operations required to carry out the observation and acquire the data, and the data reduction required to commission the mode.

Management Plan (Percival)

This document contains the management plan for the design, construction, delivery, and commissioning of PFIS.

This document describes the interface between PFIS and the SALT Observatory. Included are optical, mechanical, electrical, coolant, thermal and control interfaces.
